In regards to the Haiti earthquake disaster

This is Calvin Toews from Toews Sewing. After reading the January 20, 2010 news article "Haiti After the Disaster" here's what Toews Sewing is doing to help.

All the used sewing machines and sergers that we have accumulated over the last couple of years will be donated to the Haiti earthquake survivors.

Invitation

If you have an extra sewing machine or serger you do not use anymore, you are welcome to drop it off at our store location; we will package it up and send it with our sewing machines to Haiti.

If you love to sew and do use your sewing machine and have considered upgrading to a new one, we are offing you both sewing machine and serger trade in allowances and we will package your old working machine and send it to Haiti.

We will be putting a care package in the box with your old sewing machine.
This package will include; thread, scissors, tape-measures and other sewing essentials.
We would like to thank Janome, Baby Lock, Elna, and Jefferson's (Canada's largest sewing notion supplies) for all their cooperation. Most importantly we would like to thank good people like you.

It's important to remember we have it very, very good in Canada << View Link) and your old machine will be appreciated more than most people could possibly ever imagine. In-fact, for the most part, its women helping women. A sewing machine is a way to earn a living and feed a family.

Why are we at Toews Sewing offering to send these machines to Haiti?

Please consider the summarized article below.

CaribWorldNews, WASHINGTON, D.C., Weds. Jan. 20, 2010:

While immediate attention is correctly focused on search and rescue and humanitarian efforts, comments by President Obama and other world leaders have also addressed the need for more long- term approaches. Trade will play an essential role and supporters of Haiti must work to ensure the appropriate policy framework and perspective going forward.

Special access to the U.S. market duty- free apparel industry.

The program extends to Haiti, until 2018, duty- free access to the U.S. market for specified textiles and apparel products and allowed them more flexible sourcing arrangements, such as combining with inputs from the neighboring Dominican Republic. U.S. technical assistance has focused on improving the quality of the apparel industry's sourcing, production and marketing; providing workforce training for young adults in basic industrial sewing; strategic planning for the sector; and encouraging U.S. investments in the sector.

It is crucial to remember that this earthquake can, and will most likely happen again. While the international community has demonstrated its willingness to rally around another member in times of disaster, the long-term approach needs to improve the ability of Haitians, and the entire Caribbean region, to help themselves to rebuild.
