The Perfect Invisible Zipper

An invisible zipper is a beautiful finish for a sheath dress and it is so easy to apply with the help of the Beading Foot Set. The small foot has a channel the perfect size to guide along the zipper coil.

If your dress includes a separate lining, here is a professional technique for the zipper application. All stitching is done by machine, and the dress is perfectly finished inside and out.

  1. Sew the neckline seam as directed by the pattern but leave the last 2" at the centre back seam unsewn. Do not sew the centre back seam.
  2. Trim 1/2" from the centre back seam of the lining only, tapering to nothing at the waist.

  3. Remove the zipper from its package, and with the iron on low heat, press the zipper to remove the creases. In this technique the zipper is sewn to the lining first, and then to the garment.
  4. Position the zipper with the wrong side of the zipper to the right side of the lining, matching the edges. Stitch, using the Standard foot "A" with a 1/4" seam. Position the second side and stitch. Lightly press the seam allowance away from the zipper.

  5. Finger-press the centre back seam allowances to the wrong side. From the first side, reach between the dress and the lining and grab the dress seam allowance and the zipper tape, flipping the dress out of the way. Stitch the zipper tape to the dress, following the previous stitching line. Stitch again, using the small Beading Foot and adjusting the needle position to stitch close to the zipper coil. Repeat for the second side.

  6. To finish the neckline seam, place right side of the lining to the right side of the dress with the zipper sandwiched between. Roll the seam allowance to the lining side, and stitch the remaining portion of the neckline seam. Trim.
  7. The last step is to complete the back seam below the zipper. With the right sides of the dress together, stitch a 5/8" seam, using the Zipper foot "E" and starting 1/2" above the end of the zipper. Stitch seam from the zipper to the hem of the dress. For the lining, change to the Standard foot "A" and stitch 5/8" seam starting 1" below the zipper to the hem of the dress. Press seams open and zip dress. Press the zipper seam lightly.
