Perfect Petals
Created by Lina McGehee, Shreveport, LA, USA

Linda loves the built-in editing capabilities of her Memory Craft machines, preferring to manipulate, change colours, alter sizes, and save the results using the touchscreen on her Memory Craft 10001 rather than her computer. Her jewelry project uses a leaf design from her own Floral Dimensions 2 Signature Series CD from Cactus Punch. By layering the petals in various configurations, you can create a striking dimensional look in a variety of sizes.

Professional-Style Embroidery
  1. Set up the Memory Craft for Professional-Style Embroidery.
  2. Insert a Red Tip needle 90/14.
  3. Thread the needle and bobin with Janome Embroidery thread.
  4. Sandwhich water-soluble stabilizer between two layers of Sparkle Organza.
  5. Position layers of fabric in the Large Hoop B using the Clothsetter.
Hint: To prevent fabric from falling onto the hoop area while stitching, hoop the fabric layers in the upper right corner. By hooping in the corners of the organza, there is space to hoop four times in a fat quarter of fabric using the Large Hoop B.
  6. Attach the hoop to the machine.
  7. Embroider designs.
  8. Using a soldering iron or stencil burner, carefully cut away excess fabric from each of the flower and petal designs.
Hint: Place the fabric on a tile or other surface that will not melt when using the tool. Sparkle Organza quickly metls when touched with heat. Work carefully in this process to avoid melting too much. Another option is to trim the organza away from the stitchign with scissors and seal the fine threads of fabric that remain with the soldering iron.
  9. Soak the petals in warm water for a few seconds and partially rinse out the stabilizer.
Note: It is important that some stabilizer remains in the fabric to act as a starch to shape and form petals.
  10. Place the petals on a paer towel to dry. Manipulate and shape the petals if so desired while the fabric is damp.
  11. After petals have dried, it is permissible to spray the flower with water to reshape if desired.

Note: The petals should be staggered rather than matching.
  6. Gently lift the top two layers of flowers.
  7. Beginning in the centre and following the centre vein of the flower, stitch about half the distance from the centre out to hold these layers on the suede base.
  8. Lay the smallest layer of petals on the stitched petals.
  9. Hand-stitch a button through all layers.
  10. Attach chain, cord, or ribbon to suede on the backside of flower.
  11. Trim excess suede from back.

  13. Hand-stitch a button through both layers to hold together.
  14. Use a lower temp glue gun to attach earring findings to the back of earring.

Linda's Tips
  • Flowers are naturally pretty on the underneath side as well as the top. In nature their edges curl to reveal both side of the petal. For this reason, it's pretty important to have pretty thread int he bobbin as well as the needle.
  • Always being this project with a full bobbin. Janome's large bobbin will stitch the full design for 30 minutes without stopping.
  • Change the colour of thread with each hooping to modify the colour arrangment. Remember to change the bobbin thread too.
  • Reverse the fabric colours with each hooping for vaariety. Red organza on magenta organza is a different colour that magenta organza on red organza. Orange with red or magenta is a great combination too.
  • Create four different flower combinations from two fat quarter colours by reversing the fabric with each hooping and changing the thread colours.
  • Experiment with colour. Nature's full of wild colour combinations.
