Sheer Delight Lace CurtainCreated by Annette Venn, Janome AustraliaThis curtain panel, with its elegant lace insets, is designed to allow light to stream in, yet still provide privacy. The simplicity of the design gives you the creative flexibility to dress it up or down to match your decor with your choice of lace, certain rings and curtain rods.
Janome Supplies Required- Any Janome sewing machine
- Standard foot A
- Satin Stitch foot F
- Blue Tip needle 75/11
Fabric and Notions RequiredNote: Yardage for fabrics is according to measurements in preparation steps.- Lace to cover two widths of fabric
- Curtain fabric, rings and rod
- 100% cotton thread
- Rayon embroidery thread
- Spray starch
Fabric PreparationNote: This curtain is designed to hang straight, but can be gathered.- Measure the desired length of the curtain from the rod to window sill.
- Measure the rod width to determine your finished size.
- Allow an extra 4" for side turnings (do not include selvages).
- Allow an extra 3" for squaring up the fabric.
- Square up the fabric and cut to size according to measurements.
- Spray-starch the cotton linen fabric. Press.
Instructions- Set up the machine for Ordinary sewing.
- Thread the needle and bobbin with cotton thread.
- Turn under 5/8" twice to create a double hem for the lower hem. Press.
- Stitch hem in place.
- Trim a length of scalloped edge lace edging to be attached across the lower hem. The width should be wide enough to be attached to the fabric. (approximately 1/4").


- Thread the needle and bobbin with rayon embroidery thread.
- Attach the Satin Stitch foot F.
- Sew the lace to the curtain fabric hem, right sides together.

- Turn the lace to the right side. Press.
- Topstitch close to hemline. Press again.

- Fold under a double 1" hem along each side of the curtain. Press.
- Thread the needle and bobbin with cotton thread.
- Stitch close to fold.
- Finger press the centre of the top of the curtain.
- Allow an overlap of approximately 1" at each end, measure and cut your lace making sure the pattern is equally spaced and centered.
- Pin the lace along the top edge of the curtain fabric with the wrong side of the lace facing the right side of the fabric. Baste. Select lace that has large flowers or motifs that allows you to cut around them easily. Also look for a finished edge that will create a neat lower part of the curtain.
- Baste again along the centre and just above the lower border of the lace panel to prevent movement.

- Pin the lace to the curtain fabric as close to edges as necessary.
- Select a Zigzag stitch. Adjust the length to 1.0 and width to 2.5. Adjust the tension to 0.6. Reduce the pressure to 1.
- Thread the needle and bobbin with rayon embroidery thread.
- Sew slowly and carefully following the shape of the lace edge.
- Trim the curtain fabric away from behind the lace close to stitching.
- Fold a double 1/2" hem on each side of the lace panel. Press.
- Stitch hem in place. You can also trim some of the lace edging and apply to the sides of the lace panel in the same was as the lower hem.
- For the lower lace section, the lace used in this project had a centre pattern of roses which were carefully cut out and applied using the same technique as the upper lace section.
- Attach 1" brass curtain rings at regular intervals along the top edge of the lace.
- Spray starch and press finished curtain.
